Social Transformation and Collective Liberation
DANCE MONKS (Est. 1999) was founded by a bi-cultural family of artists of Mexican and Irish/Slavic origins living and working between Mexico and the United States. Our creative practices are rooted in mutual care towards social transformation and collective liberation, especially for those who are vulnerable or whose stories have not been traditionally heard. We recognize the subtle and overt power dynamics in intercultural exchange and create spaces for reflection and growth to build meaningful relationships across borders.
We value diverse students, colleagues, and collaborators and create reflective, respectful, and challenging spaces in which to include different ways of life, cultures, values, and ideas. By "diversity," we mean that we embrace and welcome differences in gender expression and identity, age, culture, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, physical ability, learning style, religion, spiritual practices, nationality, immigration status, socio-economic status, as well as the many ways of being and life experiences that span these differences. We recognize that such a broadly inclusive understanding of diversity requires ongoing reflection, education, and effort to ensure support, understanding, and awareness. As such, we proactively educate ourselves and our students on anti-racism, decolonization practices, and suppressed histories.
